Discernment Counseling

Are you or your partner considering divorce? This can be an extremely difficult decision and deciding with clarity and confidence should be a priority. Discernment Counseling is a type of counseling that allows for you to slow down, breathe, and look at the different options available during this difficult time.

Through this process, I will help you decide whether you would like to restore your marriage to health, move toward divorce, or take a time out and decide later. The goal is for you and your spouse to gain clarity and confidence about a direction, based on a deeper understanding of your relationship and its possibilities for the future. Discernment counseling will not solve your marital problems but it may help you identify if they are solvable.

My goal is to treat both of you with compassion and respect no matter how you are feeling about your relationship at the moment. The structure of Discernment Counseling is different to that of couple therapy, since much of the work will be done individually.  While holding respect toward the reasons why you would want to divorce, we will work on opening up the possibility of trying to restore the relationship to marital health. We will work on identifying the contributions both partners have made to the problems of the relationship and the possible solutions. This will be useful in future relationships, even if this one ends.

This is a short-term treatment process with a maximum of 5 sessions. The first session is 2 hours long and each subsequent session is 1.5 hours long. Not all couples are suitable for Discernment Counseling. Couples experiencing domestic violence, coercion, or couples that have already decided to divorce would not benefit from Discernment Counseling.
